Not sure what to wear for spring runs? I’m breaking down exactly what to wear running in spring by temperature, including my favorite spring running outfits for women. From tanks and biker shorts to windbreakers and long sleeves, this is my honest guide to spring running clothes that actually work — including options for petite runners.
My go-to spring running outfits — broken down by temperature so you always know exactly what to wear.
Spring is finally here — and it’s easily the best time of year to run. But it’s also the trickiest season to dress for. One wrong layer choice and you’re either sweating through mile two or freezing at the start line. I’ve been running through all kinds of spring weather during half marathon training, and I’ve figured out exactly what works. Here’s my honest breakdown.
Whether you’re a total beginner heading out for your first few miles or a recreational runner logging serious mileage, this guide will tell you exactly what to wear — and what I personally reach for every single time I head out the door.
Why Spring Running Is Hard to Dress For
Winter is easy — you layer up. Summer is easy — you wear as little as possible. But spring? You might leave the house at 6am when it’s 44°F and finish your run when it’s pushing 65°F and sunny. Dress for the start and you’ll be miserable by mile three. Dress for the end and you’ll wish you had a jacket for the first two.
With that in mind — here’s my formula by temperature range.
Spring Running Outfit by Temperature
| Temp | Top | Bottom | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 45°F | Long sleeve + windbreaker | Capris or tights | Gloves |
| 45–55°F | Short sleeve | Biker shorts | Optional windbreaker |
| 55–65°F | Tank or short sleeve | Biker shorts or fun shorts | Sunglasses |
| 65°F+ | Racerback or cropped tank | Lightweight shorts | Sunglasses, hat |
Now let’s get into the actual pieces — and why I love each one.
Still Chilly — Don’t Skip the Layers
This is full coverage territory. You need a base layer that breathes and a wind-blocking outer layer on top. The mistake most runners make at this temp is going too heavy — you don’t want a full winter jacket, you want something thin enough to keep moving in.
ZHENWEI UPF 50+ Long Sleeve Sun Shirt
I know “sun shirt” sounds like something you’d wear on a boat, but trust me — it’s one of the best spring running layers out there. This is the same material as my favorite long sleeve, and it is so lightweight you almost forget you have it on. It’s thin enough to wear under a windbreaker and breathes well when you start heating up. The UPF protection is a bonus on those bright spring mornings.

Reebok Women’s Marathoner Windbreaker
A thin windbreaker is a spring runner’s best friend. This one cuts the wind without making you feel like you’re running in a trash bag. It’s packable too — if you warm up mid-run, you can tie it around your waist and keep going without missing a beat. This is my go-to for those cold, breezy spring mornings when you need just a little extra protection.

This is honestly my favorite temperature range to run in. Cool enough that you’re not overheating, warm enough to drop the heavy layers. A short sleeve top and biker shorts is usually all you need — your body does the rest once you get moving.
Under Armour Women’s Tech Twist Short Sleeve V-Neck
This is my go-to short sleeve when I want something a little more structured than a tank. It’s soft, moves with you, and — most importantly — doesn’t cling or get heavy when you start sweating. The V-neck keeps it from feeling too athletic in that generic way. I reach for this one constantly in the cooler end of spring.

IUGA Biker Shorts — 6″ Tummy Control
I am not exaggerating when I say these are the best running shorts I have ever owned. I have them in so many colors it’s a little embarrassing. They are high-waisted with a tummy control panel so they don’t roll down, and they have deep side pockets that actually fit your phone. They do not ride up. At all.
Finding shorts that stay put without digging in is everything. If you only buy one thing from this post, make it these.

This is full spring running mode. Light layers, lots of movement, and you’re going to feel good out there. A tank or short sleeve with biker shorts is all you need — and if it’s sunny, don’t skip the sunglasses.
Amazon Essentials Quick Dry Racerback Tank
This is the tank I reach for most once temps climb into the upper 50s and above. It’s affordable, comes in a ton of colors, wicks sweat fast, and doesn’t get heavy mid-run. I’ve washed mine a hundred times and they still look great. This is my warm weather running staple all the way through summer.

ChicknLegs Running Shorts
These are not an affiliate link — I just genuinely love them and had to include them. ChicknLegs makes the most fun running shorts I own. They’re lightweight, flowy, and just make a run feel more playful. When I want to feel a little extra on a spring morning, these are what I grab. They come in wild prints and solid colors and honestly just make me happy.

When it’s warm and the sun is out, you want as little between you and the breeze as possible. Racerback tank, biker shorts or lightweight shorts, and please — do not skip the sunglasses. Running into the sun without them is miserable.
Ukoly Cycling Sunglasses
I know “cycling sunglasses” sounds intense, but hear me out. These stay on your face. They don’t bounce. They wrap around enough to block wind and sun from the sides, and the interchangeable lenses mean you can swap for different light conditions. I will not run without them on a bright spring morning. Total game changer for anyone who’s ever had regular sunglasses fly off mid-run.

Outfit sorted — now let’s talk about the things that seem minor but genuinely change how a run feels.
DANISH ENDURANCE Ultra-Comfort Quarter Running Socks
Please, please don’t run in regular cotton socks. I learned this the hard way. These are slightly taller than a traditional ankle sock, which protects the back of your ankle from rubbing against your shoe — a spot that blisters faster than you’d think on longer runs. They’re cushioned in the right places and hold up wash after wash. Such a small thing that makes such a big difference.

BLITZU Calf Compression Sleeves
If your calves or shins are giving you trouble — or if you’re deep in a training block and your legs are just tired — compression sleeves are worth having in your kit. I wear these on runs when my legs feel beat up or when I need a little extra support. They help with circulation and reduce that heavy-leg feeling, especially later in training when the mileage adds up. A solid, affordable option worth keeping around.
